Welcome to my musical world! On the journey so far, I’ve had the pleasure of working on a range of projects, chasing great songs and collaborating with fantastic people along the way. Here’s a selection of tracks from my discography to cue you in.
This original song is a full production all the way through the pipeline. From lyrics to arrangment, instrument performances to vocals, production to final mix.
Showcasing my hands-on approach to music making, “21 Minutes” marked something of a new beginning for me in 2022. After 17 years of publicly releasing music, I took the plunge and went solo on this one. Touching on themes of youth, desire, and transcendent hope, I played the instruments, produced, and mixed the final piece.
In Tommo & Hooke, a collaboration with my brother Hamish, this song from our 4-track EP “Commuter” demonstrates my ability to contribute to a shared creative process. My role involved overseeing instrumentation, sound engineering, and providing artistic direction while playing piano and bass on this track.
In tandem with the release of “Commuter,” I completed a Student Soul project titled “He Oro Tuhaha.” The EP’s name, meaning “A Sound Like No Other” in Te Reo Maori, embodies the project’s artistic vision. I’ve selected “Haere Mai Matou” to highlight my skills as a team leader, guiding students through the recording process, while also showcasing my production and instrumental contributions.
“Diamonds” showcases the defiant perseverance of two busy young dads, striving to keep their passion for music alive amid life’s chaos. This track had been a live staple for us for 4 or 5 years prior to this 2016 release. We successfully combined live band energy with catchy pop melodies while navigating our transition from a 4-piece to a 2-piece band.
“Company Feel Good” is an ambitious album that pushed our limits, probably beyond what we should have been aiming for, in retrospect. The title track, although somewhat imperfect like many songs on the album, embodies the expansive and raw energy our band harnessed and embraced at the time. I take responsibility for the aggressive and soaring lead guitar. You’re welcome.
The song “Slasher,” created with my brother and two other band members for our debut EP in 2009, demonstrates my ability to adapt to different musical styles. This catchy pop song with a dark demeanour enjoyed sustained airplay on New Zealand’s Christian radio station Life FM. I contributed keyboard arrangements that added a distinctive sonic element to the track.
Finally, “Aristotle” from the band Mephymology, where I played drums, highlights my skills in collaborative songwriting and arrangement. This complex and emotive piece went through a rigorous creative process that resulted in engaging live experiences. The song still evokes a depth of feeling for me and serves as a something of a portal into the rich relational world of my student years.
